Dominican Republic suffers countrywide blackout after 'chain of malfunctions'
This Caribbean country has experienced a countrywide power cut which officials said was connected to a failure in the electricity transmission system.
During the early afternoon, an issue at a power station resulted in a nationwide interruption to power services, the national energy provider reported.
Authorities stated a thorough investigation would be conducted to identify the cause and that efforts were ongoing to quickly return electricity.
This island country, which is host to about eleven million inhabitants, has been undergoing smaller power outages in recent weeks.
Spokespersons at the state-owned utility company said generation units in two major electricity stations had ceased functioning, causing "a chain reaction of malfunctions" in other parts of the network.
Regional news outlets stated the underground train and cable car in the capital, Santo Domingo, had ceased operation and commuters had to be evacuated during the nationwide power failure on the specific date.
Additionally, there were descriptions of disorderly situations on the country's roads. Online commentators described blackouts in multiple areas of the country, but electricity and internet were operational in specific areas.
Last month, the severe storm was linked for several casualties in the Caribbean, after the major hurricane swept across the territory.
The Caribbean nation is a important vacation spot. Once ruled by European powers, the Dominican Republic divides the territory with its neighbor, a previous French territory.
