Gas Detonation Claims 3 Law Enforcement Officers During Property Removal Procedure in Northern Italy
Three police officers perished and no fewer than 15 others were hurt in a seemingly premeditated blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in the northern part of Italy.
How It Happened
The detonation was triggered as law enforcement and fire personnel entered the property in the vicinity of Verona to execute an court-ordered eviction for a brother and sister trio who were older adults.
Each of the three officers killed were members of the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female got detained at the location and a third person who fled following the incident was apprehended shortly later. All three have been transported to medical facility.
The blast could be audible approximately 5 kilometers away and images from the area displayed the property left as a pile of rubble.
“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Minister of the Interior Matteo Piantedosi, who added that attempts had been made to displace the three siblings in the previous occasions.
Financial Context
The head of the Veneto region, the regional head, stated the residence was under an eviction order due to financial obligations accumulated by the three owners.
Mediators had been sent to speak to the brothers and sister who had secured themselves into the home. When the Carabinieri arrived shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators think one of the residents set off the explosion.
“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” local police chief Commander Papagno informed reporters.
A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our personnel,” he said.
Petrol bombs were also located at the property, the minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of Italy's state police and a firefighter.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had was without power.
The official believed the detonation had taken place on a level above the doorway and told reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned officers had “heard a whistle, presumably the propane tanks being activated”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” neighbors informed Italian media, noting that the trio had earlier warned to “blow themselves up” rather than vacate the property.
“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”
Defence Minister the Defence Minister stood alongside other government officials in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
